Energy generates energy. The first and most important thing you need to do for your body is exercise. This is true for so many aspects of overall health, not just increased energy. You might think that exercising will make you more tired, but it will actually get your energy up and get your metabolism going. It is very hard to begin an exercise routine if you have never had one. But, if you can just force yourself to do some sort of exercise every morning, you will find your energy will be increased and last longer through the day. Just do something! Some simple aerobics, walking, jogging or even an eight minute workout video can make all the difference in the world. Keep working at it until exercise is as much a part of your day as brushing your teeth.

Drink plenty of water. You may have been harped on for most of your life about the importance of drinking eight glasses of water per day. It can be tough to drink that much water, but it really does make you feel better. When our bodies do not get enough water they can feel run down, dehydration can slow you down. Water helps the body in so many different ways from skin tone to your weight. It just makes good health sense to drink plenty of water. In order to motivate yourself, get six to eight bottles of water and place them in the fridge, this way, you’ll see how much you have left and it may encourage you to drink more. You can refill the bottles with tap water if spring water is too pricey or you have good tasting water in your faucet. Water has no calories, there is no excuse!

Eat right. Well, that’s easy to say but harder to do. Again, this is important for overall good health, not just increasing energy levels. Try to add more fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and proteins into your diet. Protein can give you more energy as can complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates include whole grain breads, crackers, cereals, etc. Simple carbohydrates simply generate sugar in your system which can give a short burst of energy but then leaves you lower than you started. Just try to add a few more fruits and vegetables to your activities throughout the day, and watch how much more energy you have.

Find a hobby. This doesn’t even have to be a physical hobby like bike-riding or rock climbing (although those are great!). If you like reading, go to a library and pick any book off of the shelf and give it a try. If you like photography, go for a walk and take pictures of the things around you. Staying on the couch and watching TV is not stimulating. When we are just sitting, our minds wander and we begin to feel more tired. Keeping our minds active is important in increasing our energy levels. . Sometimes we feel tired out of simple boredom, if you have some sort of project going on you will be motivated to be alert in order to take care of the day’s business so you will have time for your project. If you don’t have any hobbies or specific interests, you might think of volunteer work. Having an important purpose is a great energy booster.

Play! Go to the park, play outside with your children, learn to skate, go fishing, anything that gets you outside. Fresh air energizes you and helps you sleep better. Ever notice that when your children play outside all day they fall asleep before their heads hit the pillow? You can even do your exercising outside and kill two birds with one stone. Go outside into the world and breath deeply, meet other people and just take some time to play. People weren’t meant to live indoors twenty-four hours a day, we need sunlight and fresh air for our bodies to function properly. There have even been studies which suggest that artificial lighting can cause depression and general fatigue.

The most important thing you can do to maintain healthy energy levels (besides eating right and enough rest) are just staying active. Don’t allow boredom and laziness to control you.
