Tinnitus / Ringing in the Ears
General Tinnitus / Ringing in the Ears Information
Tinnitus is a condition that results in persistent ringing,
hissing or buzzing in the ears that is not caused by an actual
sound in the surrounding environment. Tinnitus occurs in approximately
85% of people who suffer from hearing loss. It is believed that the
noise or appearance of noise, may actually originate in the brain
as a response to the hearing loss or related inner ear damage,
rather than as a noise that is specifically being created. There
is no universal cure for tinnitus.
Possible Causes of Tinnitus / Ringing in the Ears
Tinnitus is caused by the permanent destruction of the nerve
cells of the inner ear. This can be caused by long- or short-term
exposure to loud noises. Other specific lifestyle factors related
to tinnitus include emotional/mental tension, facial tension,
headaches, poor diet and lack of sleep.
Possible Symptoms of Tinnitus / Ringing in the Ears
The main symptom of tinnitus is a noise in the ears that resembles
ringing, buzzing, hissing and whistling. The sound may be continuous
or intermittent. Tinnitus can also lead to lack of sleep, and headaches.
The degree of tinnitus varies from person to person. Some experience mild
ringing, while others are troubled by loud, high-pitched screeches.
Possible Lifestyle Changes for Tinnitus / Ringing in the Ears
A person affected by tinnitus should avoid exposure to excessively
loud noises for an extended amount of time. How loud is too loud?
If the sound in a room is so loud that a person affected by tinnitus
must raise his or her voice in order to be heard, then that person
should either leave the room or use ear protection. A person affected
by tinnitus can and should be exposed to all kinds of sound that is
not excessively loud. The auditory system flourishes in the presence
of environmental sound, and it starves in the presence of prolonged
environmental silence. Moreover, in the absence of environmental
sound, the auditory system will do what it is meant to do - seek
sound - and in doing so, tinnitus may be unnecessarily magnified.
